The Master of Science in Civil Engineering deals with the design, assessment, monitoring, management and rehabilitation of constructions and infrastructures.
Constructions encompass, among others, buildings, places of assembly, the structural parts of industrial facilities and energy production plants, bridges, tunnels, and dams. Infrastructures include roads, railways, airports, networks for collection, distribution and disposal of water, and works aimed at protecting land and environment.
In the two-year MSc programme, students complete the training gained during the bachelor’s degree programme, to achieve an education adequate to the demands of a rapidly changing world of work. This is in line with the regulations of most European countries, in which the second-level diploma (MSc), achieved after five years of university education, is clearly preferred to the BSc, and is often explicitly required for entering into employment in the field of Civil Engineering.
The graduate programme aims at strengthening the basic training of students and, at the same time, at providing them with an adequate knowledge of the core subjects of Civil Engineering. To this end, the MSc offers four different tracks, corresponding to as many suggested study plans (PSPA), which allow students to specialize in either one of the following fields: Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Transportation Infrastructures, and Structures.
The specialization tracks Geotechnics and Structures are entirely taught in English. The other tracks consist mostly of subjects taught in Italian.
Additional details and informative documents are available on the POLINTERNATIONAL website.

Internal double degrees
Internal double degrees are developed jointly with other Master of Science Programmes at Politecnico di Milano to the scope of integrating the Civil Engineer educational path with knowledge from other specific fields.
By acquiring 180 credits after completing the Bachelor of Science Programme, the candidate will obtain an additional Master of Science Degree in another Programme of Politecnico di Milano.
Additional information is available in the website of School of Civil, Environmental and Land Management Engineering.
Professional opportunities
Engineers having obtained the MSc degree find job opportunities in the following areas:
- offices and companies involved in the design of buildings, plants and infrastructures;
- construction and maintenance companies involved in civil works, plants and civil infrastructures;
- universities and higher education research institutions;
- public offices involved in the design, planning, management and control of urban and land systems;
- service companies dealing with the urban and environmental impact of infrastructures;
- companies, government offices, agencies, consortia and management agencies for surveying and monitoring.
